Bandung - Banjar

In addition to railway line Jakarta – Bogor, also build railway route which travel thorough South or North, connecting intercity to Central Java and East Java. Railway development is inspired by the success of Jakarta – Bogor line development.

Railway development plan in South area of West Java are proposed by Netherland official, Maarschalk and Mijners. Both suggested to build railway from Bogor to Bandung through Sukabumi, and then extend it until Yogyakarta. Railway development in South area of West Java has two purpose, which is economic purpose and military defense purpose. Economic purpose related to difficulty to transport crop.

This railway line plan start in some step.  First step is make railway line from Bogor to Bandung via Sukabumi, which is done in 17 May 1884. Continue with railway line development from Bandung to Cibatu that finish in 1889. From Cibatu, continue to Tasikmalaya, which open for public in 1893. This railway line development extends to Banjar and Maos which done in 1 November 1894. 1 November 1894 also a day where train transportation that connect Bandung city with Yogyakarta city start to operate because railway line Cilacap – Maos – Yogyakarta has been done build in 1887. Bandung - Banjar has 157 km length and Banjar - Maos has 79 km length.

Special for Banjar station, it was design to become big station with has many lanes for locomotive change and has fork line to Cijulang direction for 83 km length. Locomotive of train to Yogyakarta will be change with flat area locomotive like steam locomotive series C51, D50, D51 or F10. Meanwhile locomotive of train to Bandung will be change with mountain area like steam locomotive series CC10, CC50 or DD52.

The railway line that build in South area of West Java is very unique. The uniqueness can be seen from geography aspect and the way it was built. Geographical environment in South area of West Java was mainly mountain and hills area. Railway development in mountain has high level difficulty than in flat area.  One of them is Cirahong bridge. This bridge has uniqueness which is one bridge can be use by mobile/motor and train without interfere each others.

All railway line in South area of West Java is build by Netherland East Indies government by Staatspoorwegen (SS) Railway Company, not by private company. There are two reasons why South area of West Java builds by government railway company. One is financial issue and second is military issue. Railway line development in South area of West Java requires huge investment because of their geography difficulty rather than other area in Netherland East Indies.

With railway transportation infrastructure being develop in West Java especially in South area, it giving effect to people social and economic life. This effect is more intense for people who live in surrounded railway line. Train transportation has made distance travel and time travel become shorter so increase social and economic mobility. This effect has great benefit to whom using train for business or trade interes.

Train transportation has made transit station city especially in big station become vastly growing. This is happen because train transportation can increase trade activities and then stimulate trade market as central of social – economy activities.
